The Coastal Painted Turtle Project

viewThe Coastal Western Painted Turtle is BC’s only remaining native freshwater turtle. Populations of this species have plummeted over the last few decades due to several factors including loss of habitat, pollution, poaching and introduction of exotic species. Because of these and other issues, the Coastal Western Painted turtle is now federally endangered and provincially red-listed. To prevent further declines in populations, the Coastal Painted Turtle Project was formed.

The Project team is made up of several biologists focused on enhancing populations of Coastal Western Painted Turtles. Yearly surveys are conducted to gather data on hatchling survival, population trends and seasonal activities. The team also carries out several habitat restoration projects each year. These include removal of invasive vegetation, planting native vegetation, and placement of large logs in water bodies which turtles use to bask. One of our most successful restoration projects is the construction of nesting beaches.

sandSuitable nesting habitat is often limited in many areas occupied by turtles. One area in particular is Jerry Sulina Park in Maple Ridge. As we are an NGO, funding for projects is often limited, and we must work on a shoestring budget. Because of this, we were overjoyed when Lafarge Aggregates agreed to donate and deliver sand to our proposed nesting beach site at Jerry Sulina Park. Lafarge’s generosity continued when they offered us the use of a bobcat and a team of volunteers to help move the sand to the site.

It was a great experience working with Lafarge to build the nesting beach. The team of volunteers was joyful throughout construction and worked tirelessly shovelling, raking, and pushing wheelbarrows full of sand. The bobcat was invaluable and cut the work time in half. In the end, it took four hours to complete the project which is amazingly fast.

The Coastal Painted Turtle Team is extremely grateful to Lafarge Aggregates and all the Lafarge staff who helped make this beach possible. With this beach, populations of Coastal Western Painted Turtles in the area will increase over the next few years as successful nesting and hatchling survival rates will improve. Without Lafarge, this beach would not have been possible.

Thank you all.

Lafarge Customer Appreciation Golf Tournament

Untitled
On Wednesday, August 14, 2013 144 customers and sales staff  from all product lines came to the 11th Annual Customer Appreciation Golf Tournament at Northview Golf and Country Club.

Even though the sky was overcast the spirits were high with a fun filled day of golf, great food provided by multiple sponsors followed by an evening dinner banquet complete with a fundrising Live Auction – all in support of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.

This annual golf tournament is our way of saying thank you to our customers – for their continued business and partnership with Lafarge  – coupled with providing an opportunity to give back to the community.

In 2012 we came along side Canuck Place Children’s Hospice – with a vested interest in the new facility being constructed in Abbotsford. We were successful in raising just over $10,000.00 from last year’s fundraising efforts.

This year we would like to relay a big shout out of thanks to our local sponsors and customers for their generous support in partnering with Lafarge to help raise a grand total of $35,000.00 for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice!

Abbotsford Arbour Day

abbotsford arbour day

On Friday, May 10th nine Lafarge employees volunteered with over 100 other volunteers at Abbotsford Arbour Day.

Arbour Day is an annual event that is hosted by the City of Abbotsford at Mill Lake Park. This event is a celebration of trees and the natural environment, in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. The focus is on environmental stewardship, protecting natural habitat and acting responsibly in our parks and green spaces.

Over thirteen hundred elementary school students and their parents congregated at Mill Lake with over 100 volunteers, including our Lafarge employees, to learn how to plant seedlings, have guided trail tours and participate in other interactive environmental activities.

Special thanks to our employees for volunteering for this event and taking part in our first Lafarge “Volunteers At Work” event.

Lafarge Abbotsford Gravel Pit Reclamation

Lafarge Canada Inc. has owned and operated a 30 acre sand and gravel reserve operating under Abbotsford Gravel Sales, located on Clearbrook Road in Abbotsford.

By 2006, the gravel reserves were depleted from this location. At the time there were limited legal clean fill locations available.

Lafarge identified this need and worked with the City of Abbotsford to create a legal permitted fill site.
